Bandelier National Monument | New Mexico

bandelier-bw1.jpg

Olympus OM-2n | Kodak Tri-X 400
The Main Loop Trail, Bandelier's most popular. I have seen very few good pictures of Bandelier, even by professionals. Except for ArnyZona, who is awesome at everything! After being there my conclusion is that it's actually difficult to shoot well....beautiful in person but almost none of my color photos were passable and only a few of the black-and-whites. Better luck with infrared shots, to be honest.

Bandelier National Monument | New Mexico

Despite daily rain, the falls were not nearly as impressive as I hoped. Seeing the Upper Falls trickling into the small stream below, I lost enthusiasm for continuing the hike to the Lower Falls.

Tuff—or as I like to think of it after my trip to Cappadocia, tufa—is soft rock formed of volcanic ash. Seen all over Bandelier, this grouping is from the Falls Trail.

San Ysidro Church | San Ysidro, New Mexico

Saw this beautiful church just around sunrise on my first full day in New Mexico. I was headed toward the Jemez Trail and hadn't read up enough to learn about it. I'm not positive it's actually called the San Ysidro church, however, because on Google that brings up photos of a different church in Corrales.

Mine Museum | Madrid, New Mexico

Madrid is described as a "ghost town back from the dead." The mine museum is one of the few remnants of the past...the main part of Madrid seems to be artisan shops.

* Many thanks to Jason Nemeth and Joseph Levy for their IR workflow tips!

Turquoise Trail | New Mexico

The Turquoise Trail, a backroad between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, is lauded more for its cultural and historical points of interest...mainly the little ghost towns and former ghost towns scattered on its path. I didn't feel enough credit was given to its scenic highlights...it's quite a lovely drive. Unfortunately, people treat it like a large thoroughfare (except when driving through Madrid) and tailed me every time I tried to pull over for a photo.

Ghost Town | Cerrillos, New Mexico

Cerrillos is a small town on the Turquoise Trail, the backroad connecting Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Technically a ghost town because it's a shadow of its heyday, but it is populated and working for tourist dollars as much as it can. This was at the edge of town at the turnoff from the main road.
