Mon di is the spicier Rakhine twist on the classic Burmese fish stew, mohinga. The chief monk of the Buddhist Missionary Society is Rakhine, and since arriving in 2002 has drawn a group of other Rakhine supporters. Here they can speak their own dialect and enjoy their unique foods.

Many monks were forced to flee Burma after the Saffron Uprising in September 2007. Ashin Nyaninda spent 8 months teaching at Mae La and Ohm Pyan, refugee camps in Thailand. Later, he found a new home among Laotian monks in Georgia.
The devout young man on the left was a monk in Burma as well, but could not survive on alms once resettled in Virginia. Nusan likened it to learning to become human for the first time. Perhaps not surprisingly, he didn't want to talk about abandoning monkhood.
Both were visiting New York, but while Ashin Nyaninda was spending three full weeks here, the young man headed out to the bus station after lunch--because like most lay people, he probably had to work on Monday.

The Buddhist Missionary Society is in the process of purchasing a new building for its temple. As of now, large events like Thingyan are held at nearby P.S. 222. The monks have their own table, people still pray around it and serve them throughout their meal, but the atmosphere is decidedly different than the more formal temple in Brooklyn.

Sein Myint carted trayfuls of rolled mont lone yeibaw to the boiling pot outside. Servings were doled out straight from the boiling water.

Most dishes I've seen thus far were either prepared in the kitchen or in people's homes, but the mont lone yeibaw was assembled through a large group effort in the basement.

Mont lone yeibaw is a special treat for Thingyan--glutinous rice dumplings filled with palm sugar and topped with shredded coconut after boiling.

Waiting for confirmation on whether or not I could hang prints at City Bakery (with non-permanent adhesive strips, no less) meant I had 4 sessions in which to produce 20 11x14 prints for our fundraiser. I'd made some small work prints like this while waiting, but it still didn't prepare me for the amount of time it would take to print bigger. At this point they're still curling up a bit too. Exhausting. But worth it...I love the way they turned out.
Just heard today about a big alcohol donation. So far so good...lots of great silent auction items, gift bags, and the makings for a drunken Friday night (because, seriously, I know what people like).
