Hungry Croc | Liwonde National Park, Malawi

It looked kind of like this croc was lazily hoping some bird would just wander over to be eaten of its own free will.

Winnowing corn | Njobvu Village, Malawi

Small child watches a woman demonstrate winnowing corn husks.

Initiation Celebrations | Njobvu Village, Malawi

View from the back of a motorcycle. The initiation celebrations were scattered throughout the various villages along the road from Ulongwe to Liwonde National Park. Some were small enough to drive around. We came across one similar in size to this one on the main road. We had to simply wait for the revelers to go around us.

Mickey ears | Njobvu Village, Malawi

When it's a special, once-a-year occasion and you want to look your best...break out the Mickey ears.

Initiation Celebrations | Njobvu Village, Malawi

Getting drunker and drunker during the initiation celebration. Seeing a man and woman actually dancing together like this was rare...the genders seemed quite separated despite the dancing being so sexually-charged.

Mexican Festival 7.27.08 | 14th St

Really bizarre street festival, wish I knew what it meant. Involved a never-ending dance around a circle, some people dressed in flashy costumes with ruddy-cheeked masks and feathers, some as wolves, some in luchador masks without the matching leotards. Further was a portion where people alternately whipped each other (willingly, even children bent over to get lightly whipped by their parents) and set off firecrackers hidden on their bodies.

Another exciting day in the glamorous fast-paced world of fashion. Albeit the orange-cargo-pants variety of fashion.

The end of an era! This landmark former-Associated-grocery-turned-bodega on Underhill and St. Johns finally closed after ignoring its state of disrepair for years, BK-style. This pic was snapped last summer, well before the beloved remaining letters disappeared. I'd noticed that the shop was closed for a while but assumed the owners were just on summer vacation. But apparently they're renovating it into a organic fruit & veg shop.

These guys must get pretty bored...there can't be THAT many tourists needing an expensive 15-block ride.

Random parade 6.29.08 | Chinatown

So random. Only four groups as far as I could tell in this parade, which I stumbled onto warming up on Elizabeth: some sort of latino mountain group (reminded me strongly of Bolivia, but no sign of explanation), a group of older ladies, a group of dragon dancers and a group of lion dancers.

So much distraction packed into one block that these two little clowns passed by almost without notice.
