A 1000-kyat donation--about $1.20--in the baby's pocket for letting us use the family's home to cook lunch. She slept incredibly soundly surrounded by handicrafts that the women of the village kept trying to sell us.

In this case, the mobile shop wasn't stuff sold out of a motorcycle's sidecar, but just these Akha women following us to a junction on the hike that they knew we'd have to pass a few times.

The waters of the rice paddies (even during dry season) hold tilapia, snakehead fish and catfish. With some patience, someone can catch enough to sell for 4,000-5,000 kyat each day at the market in Kyaingtong city.

I love that in Myanmar villages, it's normal to just rock up to a stranger's home and expect them to brew up a pot of tea for you. And when children are involved, formalities come down to, "boy, where's my tea?" But again, totally normal.

In the weeks before the by-elections in Myanmar April 1st, the National League for Democracy--Aung San Suu Kyi's party--was free to openly campaign. Big changes from just a few months ago. Many people in Mae Sot have acquired NLD hats and t-shirts as well.
