Hernan has managed El Ocaso coffee farm for the last 7 months, and worked at the farm in other capacities for 4 years prior. His wife cooks in the comedor, although I'm unclear if she worked there previously or only since Hernan became manager and moved into the plantation house (regular workers come from further away).

The workers have to pay for meals, it's not included in their salary. Unfortunately, Hernan's wife's cooking is only fair at best. We bought lunch from her since we were out all day and hadn't brought food.

Boy casually (while smiling) getting a tattoo in one corner of the viewing platform. The boy grinning in back asked to take a photo with me--the second time in the country that someone was thrilled to take a photo with a real live chinita. But...he didn't have his own camera. And...mine was film. So...it was sorta pointless, but he seemed to enjoy it.

Steps from the Mirador | Salento, Colombia

There's two ways up to the mirador. The steps are direct and definitely get your heart pumping. The road is a little easier but longer. The nice thing about taking the road the first time I climbed up (out of 3) was that I ran into a young Canadian metal band in the parking lot. Goofy guys, in a Spinal Tap way.

I don't know why they were caged in front of someone's house on the river road. But Amelia and her sister Angelica were VERY eager to show this to me.

The circus is coming to town | Mompós, Colombia

I don't think I've seen a circus since I went to the Moscow Circus in high school. Very, very different from the traveling Ecuadorian circus. I don't think the Moscow Circus featured skimpily-dressed dancing girls from Brazil, for one thing...just what every 10-year-old wants to see.

Clearly, the circus was crazy popular. Two shows per night with lines like this.
