Som tam vendor | Mae Sot, Thailand

I'd drifted over to this storefront for its beautifully-designed menu, thinking that maybe something so professional-looking would have English translations. Alas, no. So as an extremely patient customer randomly translated a few menu items, the owner here basically said, "you know, there's a foreigner restaurant right down the street." Which I had already seen, and noted that it was jammed full of Westerners while her restaurant had only one pending take-out order by the gal who was valiantly trying to guess what items I might like. I may or may not have petulantly stamped my foot and whined, "I don't LIKE foreigner places" ...but I'm not sure, it's all a blur now. Anyway, I eventually pulled out the old standby, "I'll have what she's having" and score! it was papaya salad.

I asked for two-chili-hot which boggled the owner a bit, but after watching me eat it without problem, she opened up to speaking a bit more halting English. She is married to a Burmese man and offers a Burmese-translated menu, and she and her husband are saving up to move to Japan...she realizes it's very expensive, but is certain business would be much better there.

Another smart business. Because whenever I'm trying on transluscent panties, I get HONGRY for chicken buns.

Or actually, the police bathroom, which I only noticed from the street one day when for some reason all the police were gone for 4 minutes.

Morning Glory teaches foreigners Burmese, incorporating a great deal of religious digression. She considers Bobo one of her spiritual sons, of which she claims to have 37 or so.

On the border | Mae Sot, Thailand

The official crossing to Myanmar was closed around the time I arrived, and still has not re-opened. The main illegal crossing-by-innertube happens right next to the official crossing, which is weird, and of course that was also shut down.

This man used the boat stand instead, which is more expensive, semi-hidden and always running. His home had been wiped out by Cyclone Nargis so he'd moved to Myawaddy in hopes of finding paid work. Instead he tutors children in exchange for housing, but occasionally finds a foreigner willing to pay him as a guide.

Smart business move. I can't tell you how many times I've wondered why cigarettes and vibrators aren't sold on the same shelf.

Two classes per room, with children facing different directions. On the other side of the divider behind me, another classroom like this. Of course, the divider doesn't reach the ceiling so then it's like hearing 4 classes at once.

Students may become teachers as soon as they finish their studies. Young teachers like this help with cooking for the school. Breakfast is plain rice. Dinner is rice with curry and some vegetables, grown in their own garden. Lunch is sometimes plain rice, sometimes more.
