Seemed this entire village--at least the quarter our camp was located in--was a market. These are bogolans, or mud cloths.

Ah, dear Bernard. Usually you don't keep a Dogon porter overnight as the villages are close enough for them to go home after you arrive at your camp, but due to some major confusion about our itinerary, we re-routed Bernard through his home village of Dourou twice and had the opportunity to get to know him over three days. Sweet boy, great sense of humor.

The women start with a somewhat more low-key dance before the men come out in their elaborate masks. Many women came late, either pregnant or toting babies, seeming to just saunter out of their homes to casually join in the dance.
