I had never seen it before and figured this was the year...not only because by next summer Coney Island is likely to be drastically changed, but because this was the first year in a long time where a strong American contender challenged the slim eating machine Kobayashi. The crowd was crazed, almost equally divided between those with nostalgic love for the champ and those who were pro-American no matter what. Among the crowd were protestors, including one dressed as a snowpea. At the end of the 12 minute competition, it was a judges' decision...Joey Chestnut's 66 hot dogs to Kobayashi's 63.
