Stuck on the 1.5-lane road to Batutumonga due to a ceremony happening up the road where the family had blocked the way through the village...

Not sure if they were heading to a wedding (there was one the next day in Rantepao) or to a funeral...I saw these outfits at both. Terribly underexposed but it's the only color photo I have of this type of Torajan costume.

Because of the tendency for the buffalo the charge the crowd, the trees are actually the smartest place for the kids to sit. Oppositely, I was the only woman down on the field watching and snapping photos, which was incredibly, incredibly stupid. Actually, the real stupidity was waiting until the 6th or 7th time I needed to sprint away from a freaked-out buffalo before finally moving to a safer spot.

A procession of female family and friends began the funeral ceremony.

The small village of Parinding held a high-class funeral while I was there. Buffalo fighting is part of the ceremony, although the buffalo generally show no interest in fighting until goaded. This was one of the few that liked to fight.
