Reality of Realistics | Ulongwe, Malawi

I don't know what this sign means either. It was on the front of the shop where I got my motorcycle ride to Njobvu.

Elephants | Liwonde National Park, Malawi

I was lucky to be in Liwonde during dry season. Malawi is not known for its abundant animal life, but with the lack of watering holes, a herd of about 12 elephants appeared to drink out of the Shire River. I'd never been on a safari before, and this was a rather cut-rate version of safari to begin with...and I was just blown away.

Hippos | Liwonde National Park, Malawi

Hippos are possibly the most common big animal to see around Liwonde.

Hungry Croc | Liwonde National Park, Malawi

It looked kind of like this croc was lazily hoping some bird would just wander over to be eaten of its own free will.

Winnowing corn | Njobvu Village, Malawi

Initiation Celebrations | Njobvu Village, Malawi

View from the back of a motorcycle. The initiation celebrations were scattered throughout the various villages along the road from Ulongwe to Liwonde National Park. Some were small enough to drive around. We came across one similar in size to this one on the main road. We had to simply wait for the revelers to go around us.

Mickey ears | Njobvu Village, Malawi

When it's a special, once-a-year occasion and you want to look your best...break out the Mickey ears.

Initiation Celebrations | Njobvu Village, Malawi

Getting drunker and drunker during the initiation celebration. Seeing a man and woman actually dancing together like this was rare...the genders seemed quite separated despite the dancing being so sexually-charged.
