Mohammed watching the sheep | Petra, Jordan

The best part of my second day in Petra was meeting Mohammed and his family. On the way down via Wadi Farasa, I saw Mohammed tending sheep. His older sister was the only one in the family who could speak a bit of English, and she graciously invited me to drink shai in their cave.

The mother and brother arrived later on the donkey, referred to as "taxi." We drank endless cups of sugary tea while the children entertained me by wrestling, giving me pretty striped Petra rocks, and putting me on top of the donkey for a ride around the cave. I screamed like a baby--the ground felt really slanted!

This is a photo OF the High Place, rather than taken FROM the High Place. The remains of an obelisk is at the left. Stone pile marking a path on the right. This is where I started the beautiful hike down Wadi Farasa.

The postcard view. Well worth the hour-and-15 hike in desert heat. Was it really 800 steps? I lost count with all the chattering with my new friends, the American girls I met while hiking and the Bedouin boys who were following them. After we reached the top, we found a cave to picnic in, and then climbed up to the "view point," where I took this shot.

Despite the hassle from merchants and donkey guides throughout central Petra, climbing up to the Royal Tombs for this view gave me an incredible moment of peace.

This is just one of the Royal Tombs. I never got tired of that gorgeous red rock.

After 35 minutes walking through blistering sandy road then the much cooler Siq gorge, I finally got my Indiana Jones moment.
